WTA Championships: Serena vanquishes Vika again

ISTANBUL, October 25 – This is beginning to get silly and as hard as Victoria Azarenka has been trying to find a way to best Serena Williams, holding a 1-11 record against the 15-time Grand Slam champ and incurring five losses to her this year is black mark on her resume. On Thursday, Williams overcame came a 0-3 deficit in the second set to take down Belarussian 6-4, 6-4 in match where Serena played cleanly for the most part, but did not have to serve great and or be terribly efficient off the ground. She did not need to win the contest to reach the semifinals as she had already quailed, so it was a perfect opportunity for Azarenka to score a win over Williams. But she could not, as she double faulted nine times was broken five times, only nailed 15 winners to 35 from Williams and flubbed numerous big points. Azarenka actually won a higher percentage of their baseline rallies, but was so vulnerable on her serve that she couldn’t get into enough of them with her nose in front. Once Azarenka let go of the 3-0 lead (which was two breaks by the way) it seemed assured that Serena would find a way to best her, just like she did at Madrid, Wimbledon, the Olympics, the US Open.
