SCOOP: THURSDAY, JANUARY 5 Sharapova to play AO; Agassi won't but enters San Jose Maria tops Yahoo search engine
Despite a lingering shoulder injury that forced her to pull out of the Gold Coast, Maria Sharapova will fly to Australia on Sunday with every intention of playing the Australian Open. A source in the Sharapova camp told TennisReporters.net that the former No. 1 is still unable to serve at 100 percent, but has finally identified the source of her year-long injury woes – a tight region in the back of her shoulder that she has trouble loosening and eventually grows sore under stress. Sharapova is working with a new doctor/trainer who will travel with her to Australia. The 18 year-old superstar – who was just named Yahoo's Top Most Searched Athlete in 2005 over Anna Kournikova, Danica Patrick, David Beckham and Serena Williams – also discovered last month that she had dislocated a rib. "There's no way you are going to keep Maria off the court; she just wants to play," the source said. ANDRE RETURNS TO SAN JOSE "We are very excited about Andre Agassi's
commitment to start the 2006 season right here in San Jose," said
Tournament Director Bill Rapp. "With the addition of this eight-time
Grand Slam champion, the SAP Open now boasts the strongest player field
in its recent history – with Andre joining other Grand Slam winners
Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, John McEnroe and Jonas Bjorkman." © TennisReporters.net 2006 |
