Readers question whether Venus’ slump
will last
Trust me, Matthew Cronin, I saw Venus' loss
in Dubai, and Kuzi's forehand was on fire!

Matthew Cronin is over looking a very key fact
with Venus Williams. In 2000 she missed six months with a wrist
injury. Her first three events back (none of them semi finals
– so don't so back to 1997 like your article says) were
all poor results and she lost to players she probably shouldn't
have (Coetzer, Dokic, Sanchez-Vicario).
Then she entered Wimbledon and, well 35 wins in a row. I guess
Miami will be the telling story for Venus, to see if history repeats
itself.

I really like this site. You seem to be more
knowledgeable about the game than any other scribes who write
about tennis. You guys must be former players.
However, I've thought about it, and I disagree with you about
Venus. I don't think she should panic. Venus will never be a part
of the pack. She stinks now, but she'll be fine.
If Venus was getting blown off the courts in these last three
matches that she lost, then there would be cause for worry –
but those matches were unwatchable for the amount of errors that
Venus made.
For example, Andre Agassi should be worried. He's playing his
best and losing. I don't ever see her fighting it out with the
like of Sugiyama, Myskina and the rest while Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters,
Serena, Davenport and the rest enjoy the spoils.
No one from that group except Serena has challenged the 23-year-old
over the past three years. The fact that she's not running down
the balls that she used to and can't keep anything in the court
is a definite sign to me that the 23-year-old is obviously out
of playing shape and rusty. (Shaquille O'Neal can't make alayup
until mid-season.)
Last night I took the court at the Harlem Tennis Center for the
first time in months. My teacher made me play a match against
a 58-year-old woman who could barely bend over and pick up a ball.
I won three points the whole match. I'm not kidding. Oh, did I
tell you that I'm a 5'8, 140-pound 36-year-old former dancer,
gymnast and current marathon runner who can blast a ground stroke
at 60 miles per hour. (Not bad for a recreational player.). I
couldn't keep a ball in the court. Humiliating.
