Tim
& Tom Gullikson Foundation awards 19 college scholarships
CHICAGO, Ill., May 30, 2001 The
Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation College Scholarship Program has
awarded 19 scholarships for students attending college or graduate
school for the academic year of 2001-2002.
The
scholarship program was originally conceived and funded by woman
tennis professional Corina Morariu and supplemented with a gift
from tennis pro and Foundation Board member Pete Sampras to make
it perpetual. The program awards scholarships to families affected
by brain tumors, and is based on financial need. Special consideration
is given to members of the tennis community.
This
year"s recipients are: Amy Barnett, West Lawn, PA; Jonathan Keith
Brown, Hogansville, GA; Kristie Bullock, Munster, IN; Bill Emerson,
Palm Harbor, FL; John Gawel, Glen Carbon, IL; Tracy Golden, Alpharetta,
GA; James Huber, Durham, NC; Jordan Linder, Watertown, WI; Kyle
Logsdon, Nashville, AR; Rachel Lourie, Hanover, MA; Lisa May,
Wiley, CO; Christopher Naka, Lincolnwood, IL; Anna Rafuse, Bellingham,
MA; Michael Rogovin, Sharon, MA; Amy Spurrier, Garland, TX; Jennifer
Teague, Kenduskeag, ME; Candace Thomas, Albemarle, NC; Lauren
Toomire, Wheaton, IL; and Jennifer West, Roswell, GA.
"It
was our original intent to award five $5,000 scholarships as we
had in the past," said foundation sxecutive director Donna
Doherty, "but our applications increased tenfold this year,
so we threw out that directive and simply tried to help as many
families as we could. We are very proud of this effort and the
program, made possible by Corina"s and Pete"s generosity and support."
It is the foundation"s only program which gives funds directly
to families. All of its other fundraising efforts are directed
toward financing care and support programs offered by organizations
whose missions coincide with the foundation.
The
Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation was founded in 1995 by tennis professionals
Tim and Tom Gullikson and their families after Tim was diagnosed
with brain tumors. Tim lost his battle with the disease in May
1996.
The
mission of the foundation is to assist brain-tumor patients and
their families deal with the physical, emotional and social challenges
presented by the illness. The foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3)
corporation run by an all-volunteer Board of professionals from
sports, business, law, entertainment and journalism, including
tennis stars Pete Sampras, Todd Martin and Jim Courier. The honorees
were selected by the foundation"s junior board consisting of:
Erik Gullikson, Megan Gullikson, Petra Gullikson and Christy Gullikson,
chaired by Board member Ronald Baird.
