Is Caro her generation’s leader?

Going into every new season, hundreds of questions exist in trying to determine who will be able to reach their peak and who will falter. Predictions are always difficult to make as the injury factor consistently plays a huge role in tennis. However, just for the fun of it I thought I would pose a few different opposing scenarios and select which ones I think are more probable in 2013. I will begin with the WTA.

‘Gen Caro’

Who will have better season collectively of the current top 10, these “Gen Caro” members (Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Aga Radwanska, Angelique Kerber & Petra Kvitova) or the old guard (Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Li Na, Sara Errani and Sam Stosur)?

  1. Ever since Maria Kirilenko won the Junior US and in fact the Canadian Junior championships years ago, there was such high expectations for her in the pro ranks. She has put some good muscle tone on that slender body in the last couple of years, I feel that has really enhanced her game. She looks stronger, tougher and she has always had a very competitive nature. I think she maybe able to crack the top 10, but it will not be easy.
Maria has been beset with a number of injuries over the years, nothing really major but if she has a chance to crack the vaunted top 10, she needs to be relativly free of injury this year. She also plays a very extensive doubles campaign, so wear and tear can be a problem. It’s very true she has made the most of her abilities, but against the big power hitters, she has never faired well.
I can’st see Vinci getting into the top ten in singles, she simply does not have the strength and overall skills to crack it. Super in doubles less so in singles, very evident in her first match at Brisbane yesterday.
