Two years gone: Azarenka and Wozniacki will finally clash again

FROM THE BNP PARIBAS OPEN AT INDIAN WELLS – It was nearly two years to the day that Victoria Azarenka retired down 0-3 to then No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinal of Indian Wells after three games due to a hip problem.

That Azarenka was not the same player or woman that she is today. She was still seen as physically fragile, would go mentally in and out of matches, was nowhere near as steady and dismissed defense as readily as she does questions she doesn’t like.

    They faced off in QF two years ago, same as now (in SF Wozniacki beat Sharapova).

    And it’s silly to say Wozniacki “hasn’t beaten a top 5 player… since May 2011”, even if it’s technically true. When she beat Serena in Miami last year, Serena was clearly a top 5 quality opponent (she won her next 17 matches), even if her ranking didn’t reflect it at the time.
